Pitfalls and barriers to writing

Writing and talking are two essential ways of communicating our thoughts, ideas and opinions. But so many of us find the act (or even the prospect) of writing daunting. Why is this? In our writing courses, when we ask people what stops them from writing with ease and confidence, this is what they tell us:

School
“I can still hear the voice of my teacher giving me terrible marks for my essays”

Inner Voice
The enemy within! “Don’t even start writing – you know you’ll make a mess of it. And don’t forget, you can’t write”.

Mood
“I just never feel in the mood to write with any kind of confidence”

Blank page syndrome
“I just see that blank page and freeze up. How do I even get started? It’s so much easier to do nothing”

Booby traps
“I have got a lot to say but I get really tense about grammar, punctuation and spelling. It stops me from writing anything”

Too Risky
“Once you’ve put something in print, you are there to be shot down. I don’t want to risk being criticised, found out or humiliated in public”

What to Write
“I’m just not creative, I can’t think of anything worth writing about”
